Anesthesia, Dentistry and Surgery For Your Pet
Your pet’s safety and comfort are very important to us. To help ensure their health, all pets undergoing anesthesia, dentistry, or surgery must be examined by one of our doctors. If your pet has been examined within the past year, the pre-surgical exam will be performed at no charge. For the safety of all our patients, pets being hospitalized must also be current on the preventative immunizations recommended for them. If needed, we can update those protective vaccines.
Before any procedure, we require surgical consent from the pet’s owner. This ensures that you understand the planned procedure and any associated risks, and gives us the legal authorization to move forward with care.
Several services we provide to enhance your pet’s safety and comfort are detailed below. Pre-Anesthetic Blood Screening evaluates the organ systems most directly affecting the safety of anesthesia (the liver and kidneys) and tests for anemia and dehydration. It helps us plan the anesthetic approach that is best for your pet.
This screening can be completed the same morning as the procedure. For older patients, we recommend a more comprehensive Complete Blood Profile. This diagnostic health check provides valuable information for both surgical safety and future care planning. If results are not within the normal range, we will discuss our findings with you. In some cases, we may need to adjust medications, change the procedure, or postpone it to address medical concerns.
Our team will review the results and go over the surgical consent form with you before proceeding, so you feel informed and confident in the care your pet will receive.
For certain patients undergoing general anesthesia, we recommend intravenous fluids during the procedure. This helps to maintain blood pressure, oxygen perfusion, assist the body in processing anesthetics, and provides immediate access to administer medications in case of an emergency.
